Forgetting To Remember Something On Memorial Day

In a strange change of circumstances, I found myself doing something constructive on Memorial Day (US).

I was at our local Crossfit box attempting to do the “Murph” workout. I was asked by a coach to modify it, considering my shoulder popped loud enough to hear over music. I felt like I did okay, completing the vast majority of my exercises in a sweet spot, had enough time to run with some wiggle room.

(I did not wear a weight vest as many do. I think that it might take some more training to get into that level of beating).

The Murph is in memorial to Lt. Michael Murphy, a Navy Seal who lost his life in the military. (He also designed the workout, a cardiovascular trial of sorts).

It is one thing that I forgot that “the Murph” was going on this morning, finally remembering late last night. But it was another to forget a handful of folks that I knew that lost their lives when in the service. I knew of one or two specifically. (I also knew of two that had horrific illnesses that most likely could not be recovered from).

I forgot the legion of those that had hung up their proverbial boots, to have time cut short. Many of them were my shipmates, people I wish I had around.

I am sure that my lost former shipmates might not make the Memorial Day nut, but I feel that I owe it to them. Many of them saw us through the dark straights and gave a chunk of their lives to us, to me. I miss them dearly.

Neptune willing we will see you in Fiddler’s Green. Rest easy my old brothers.

  2. Good post Matt.

    RIP to those folks.

And hope your shoulder holds out. I think that’s the 40s men curse – once a man hits 40-something, he’ll have shoulder problems. It’s just something we live with. Mine almost made it to my late 40s.

I switched my workouts to only squats, deadlifts, push-ups, pull-ups, and running. Too injured for bench and overhead press.
